Scarecrow Challenge unites Girlguiding units across Dorset
Local Girlguiding groups were celebrating this week after winning a countywide Scarecrow Challenge to mark the end of summer and the appointment of a new Guiding Commissioner for Dorset.
Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from across Dorset took part in the challenge to create a scarecrow – or even a whole family of them – to display in their meeting places throughout September to promote Girlguiding in the community and encourage new members and volunteers.
An impressive 53 scarecrow entries were received, ranging from the typical Wurzel Gummidge look-alikes to more creatively themed Guides, mermaids, and even a Superman.
Outgoing Guiding Commissioner for Dorset Racheal Tattum helped with the judging alongside newly appointed Commissioner Lisa Upward, who announced winners in three categories:
- Best group shot – St. Christopher’s Guiding family (Southbourne)
- Best Individual (Guiding) – 1st Sandford Brownies
- Best Individual (Non Guiding) – 1st Ferndown Rainbows
Lisa Upward said: “This was a fantastic initiative and it was great to see so many units across the county taking part. The girls had a great time creating their scarecrows and displaying them in the community, some as part of their local harvest festival celebrations. I’d like to congratulate our winners and say a big well done and thank you to everyone who took part. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing County Commissioner Racheal Tattum for her incredible contribution over the last 3 years.”
